Intranets and Extranets
The terms 'intranet' and 'extranet' describe the two main types of software technology that have been adopted worldwide by companies that need fast and reliable access to internal data and systems from anywhere within the organisation.
These systems are usually maintained on one or more central 'server' computers which store data, process requests for information, run reports, channel information to the right places and people, and make daily data backups. Computers throughout the company are then connected to the servers to feed information in, make requests for information, and make best use of the system.
These computers can use various software programs to achieve what they need to, from sales quotations to stock control, accounts to secretarial work. Quick and easy access to the company's main database is essential.
